It is having structure in February, colour in late August when most gardens have quit, and seed heads and grasses carrying the bed through a Michigan winter. That is a composition problem, and it is the part we enjoy most.
Perennials are the part of a landscape that gets better every year instead of just older. Worth doing properly the first time.
