Most trees that fail in a mid-Michigan yard were killed at planting, not by weather. Planted too deep, mulched into a volcano against the trunk, or dropped into a hole of unamended clay that holds water like a bucket. Fifty years of doing this in these soils is mostly fifty years of not making those mistakes.
Strategic shade planting on the west and south sides of a house is one of the few landscape decisions that pays you back on the energy bill.
